The Cajuns are looking for a few more athletes to fill out their 2011 Signing Class as Morgan City…
Catching Up With Shawn Long
"That was my first visit with Coach Johnson and to meet Coach Marlin," stated Shawn. "It was an unofficial visit and we watched the team practice; Coach Marlin runs a tough practice, but it's something I could handle. I had seen the indoor practice court last summer, when we participated in the UL team camp."
Long's mother has known Cajun assistant Kevin Johnson for many years, is that an important factor in considering the offer from Louisiana?
"Yes, my mom has known Coach Johnson for a long time," Long said. "So it's good to know that he is someone that my family trusts and he coaches at a program that has offered. My decision to play at UL or not, won't be based upon Coach Johnson being on the staff; I have to be comfortable with the program and the environment."
With offer in hand, when will Shawn Long take an official visit to UL?
"Coach Johnson came by and visited with me at school today," Shawn stated. "But I haven't set a date to take an official visit to UL yet and I don't know when I will at this time. Coach Johnson wants me to come up soon, so I will discuss it with my coach and family before I decide to take an official visit."
As a junior, Long averaged 21.4 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots per game. His development over the summer has drawn offers from Texas State, ULM, McNeese State, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, Florida A&M, Nichols State and Louisiana Tech. Shawn took an official visit last weekend at Louisiana Tech and spent time with Karl Malone.
"The visit was great," said Long. "I spent some time with Karl Malone and we talked about the program. I really liked the atmosphere at Tech and it would be a great place to play college basketball. I felt comfortable while I was on the visit and they are certainly a program that I'm giving strong consideration."
Has Shawn looked at the current rosters and what each program returns at the forward position next season?
"Both programs are losing a number of athletes that play forward," Shawn stated. "I would have an opportunity to play early in both programs and that is what I'm looking for when I make a decision to sign."
How would Shawn Long describe his game?
"I can play inside and out facing the basket," said Long. "I can also handle the ball and create my own shot. I more comfortable facing the basket, but I can also rebound in the post as well. I can help a program on the wing at small forward, at guard and in the post."
Shawn Long has scored a 20 on the ACT and currently holds a 2.7 GPA in his core.
