Quick Hits with Lamar Johnson

The Cajun Redzone caugth up UL's latest football commitment, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College safety Lamar Johsnon.

What was you initial impression of UL?

"I've never been on the campus," said Johnson. "But as soon as I hit the campus it just felt right to me at that time. The university is not that big nor is it too small, so I really felt at home as walked around throughout the day."

Did the opportunity to play close to home make your decision easier?

"Sure, they were my best offer and the fact that UL is close to home made my decision a little easier to make," Lamar stated. "It's great that my family can drive up and watch me play college football for the next two years. It's just a relief that I found a program that is close to home and I feel comfortable with."

Your mother stated that academics was important to you and her, did meeting Dr. Zappi help answer any concerns that either of you may have had during the visit?

"There's no doubt that our meeting with Dr. Zappi made a huge impression upon my mother," said Johnson. "He was straight forward with us and made it clear that I made the right decision for my education as well as playing football."

Did Le'Marcus Gibson talk to you about the program and the coaching staff?

"I know Le'Marcus, but I didn't talk to him about the program," Lamar stated. "We really haven't seen each other since he left and I hadn't spoken to him since the last time we saw each other on campus at school."

What were some of the comments from the other athletes visiting with you this past weekend?

"There was a guy I spoke to about his visit, but he told they hadn't offered him yet," said Johnson. But we really didn't have much time to talk with other people other then the coaches. While we sat in the stands, I was more focused on the game then talking to other athletes visiting."

Did you have a comfort level with Coach Fouquier and Coach Brown?

"Coach Fouquier has recruited me all along," Lamar stated. "I really just felt like he wanted me to be part of the program and play for him. I just had a comfort level with him and that made my decision easier to make as well. Coach Brown made my mom feel much better about my decision to commit. He knows the game and I look forward to playing for him next season."

How do you fit in with the present defensive scheme?

"We play a lot of the same coverage's," said Johnson. "We have different signals, but I feel comfortable in what they ask the safeties to do in their system. Coach Fouquier told me that the starting free safety is a senior and was lost for the season and they are playing a cornerback out of position right now. I have a chance to come in the spring and learn the system to compete for the starting position."

The Cajun Redzone will have more interviews from last weekend's visits tomorrow and Friday.
