Shawn Long Talks Cajun Visit

The Cajuns are looking for a few more athletes to fill out their 2011 Signing Class as Morgan City HS senior forward Shawn Long traveled in to take in Friday's game in the Cajun Dome.

The Cajun's basketball staff is trying to fill several scholarship slots available in the 2011 signing class. Shawn Long was the latest athlete to visit this past Friday night at the Cajun Dome as the Cajuns battled the Aggies of New Mexico State. The "6-8", 230-pound bruiser is considered a four, but has the shooting range and dribbling skills to help at the three position as well. What did Shawn Long think of his first visit to the Cajun Dome?

"That was the first time I've seen a game in the Cajun Dome," Long said. "The place was pretty rowdy and the fans got into the game. It's certainly an atmosphere I could see myself playing college ball in. The scoreboard was really nice and the game good from our seats.

Long watched the Cajuns offensive sets very closely as he took in the game.

"I watched their bigs work down low and they didn't shoot very well," stated Shawn. "I know they have three post guys graduating this year, so there is opportunity for me to play right away in the UL program. I certainly feel like I have the skills to help this program in a position of need."

Shawn, whom traveled in with his brother, has offers from Louisiana, Texas State, ULM, McNeese State, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, Florida A&M, Louisiana Tech and Tulane. After the game, Long stayed a few minutes to visit with Coach Kevin Johnson and Bob Marlin.

"It was an opportunity to speak with both of them and talk a little about the game," Long said. "I watched coach Marlin during the game and his approach is pretty straight forward in addressing his players in the huddle and on the bench. I was able to take in the game in the dome and get a feel for the program."

As a junior, Long averaged 21.4 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots per game. Is Shawn close to making a decision and signing during the early period?

"I'm probably going to wait until next year to sign," stated Shawn. "I'm focused on basketball season right now and would like to have a little more time to consider the programs have to offer a student athlete. But I can see myself play at UL, I'm just not ready to make a decision at this point."

Cajun fans can catch Morgan City and Shawn Long in a scrimmage against St. Thomas More Tuesday afternoon in Lafayette.
