At the end of the 2009 football season the Oxford Chargers sat at 6-6. It was a disappointing record…
Oxford's Billups Weighing Options
"I was really excited to come down to Louisiana and see what the program had to offer," Billups stated. Coach Hudspeth said some exciting things about what was going on down there right now and how the program was about to explode. All of us were just talking about playing college football together for the next four years."
Once on campus, Guy checked into the hotel with the rest of the recruits and had the opportunity to visit the campus, athletic facilities and with the coaching staff.
"I really didn't know what to think about the campus and community coming in," said Guy. "Once we had the opportunity to tour the campus, take a look at the facilities and head out to eat lunch at the restaurant, Lafayette was much larger then I imagined. The campus was spread out and the facilities were better then all of us had thought coming in."
After touring the campus, Billups finally had the opportunity to sit with Coach Hudspeth and talk about their plans at the quarterback position.
"My father and I sat down with Coach Hudspeth to talk about the quarterback position," Billups stated. "Coach told us that because of the number of athletes on scholarship, they didn't have anything at the quarterback position. I was a little disappointed but coach went on to say that he would offer me a preferred walk-on opportunity and they were not visiting any other high school quarterbacks. I had a few questions that I wanted answered after that; mainly I wanted to know if I was going to get the opportunity to compete if I came in or just run the scout team? Coach told me that they would give me every opportunity to compete and once the two seniors finish their eligibility next season, he would have a scholarship for me."
Guy will also have the same opportunity offered to him at Rice University. With both offers on the table, he will travel down to Houston this weekend to get a look at the Owl's program.
"While I really enjoyed the visit and would love to be a Ragin'Cajun, I want to at least take a look at the football program and academics at Rice to weigh both offers," said Guy. "Once we visit Rice, then I will sit down with my father and we can compare both programs. I will be in touch with Coach Hudspeth and let him know my final decision."
