First-Team Class 5A all-state point guard Elfrid Payton announced his decision today to sign with the UL Basketball program. The "6-1", 170-pound John Ehret High athlete averaged 12.8 points, 5.2 asst. and 4.1 steals per game as a senior for the 30-4 Patriots. He was also named District 9-5A MVP and a member of the Times-Picayune All-Metro team. Payton was happy with his decision to become a Ragin'Cajun.
"I really liked the coaching staff and the facilities," Elfrid stated. "The indoor practice court and Cajun Dome are really great facilities to play in."
Payton stated that he had interest from Tulsa, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Wichita State, Texas A&M and several other state programs. But UL was his only Division 1 offer to date.
Elfrid thinks his style of play fits well with Coach Marlin's system.
"I really like to get up and down the court," said Payton. "I can play defense and make steals and my game is getting other involed in the offense."
Payton has met NCAA eligibility standards have scored a 21 on the ACT, while maintaining 3.7 GPA in the class room.
Elfrid Payton will join Brunswick Community College guard Alan-Michael Thompson as spring signees. The Cajuns are also focused on several high school fowards including Shawn Long from Morgan City. But another hot prospect in the Houston area is said to be interested in the Ragin'Cajun program.
