Jennings' Kris Watkins

TE/LB Kris Watkins was a hidden gem who came on last season for the Jennings Bulldogs. He was over looked for good reason because he played along side 2 1000 yard rushers in Devondrick Phillips and Mike Wilridge who are both preferred walk-ons at the college level this coming season and also with Bryson Abraham who received a scholarship offer to attend La Tech this coming season.

Kris Watkins was a hidden gem who came on last season for the Jennings Bulldogs. He was over looked for good reason because he played along side 2 1000 yard rushers in Devondrick Phillips and Mike Wilridge who are both preferred walk-ons at the college level this coming season and also with Bryson Abraham who received a scholarship offer to attend La Tech this coming season. So there were plenty of talent on offense last season just not enough balls to go around and because Jennings runs the veer offense and passing was sometimes an after thought Watkins did not catch many passes. Because of this he was able to catch the opposing defenses by surprise last season and he made some big plays. Last season Watkins caught 21 passes for 410 yards and 10 TD's. That is almost 1 TD for every 2 catches and nearly 20 yards per reception from the TE position. Due to injuries on the defensive side of the ball late last season Watkins was asked to play both ways and in 4 games from the DE position he had 28 tackles and 2 force fumbles.

Watkins is currently listed at 6'-2" and 210 lbs. and has run as fast as 4.5 40 yard dash at Southern's camp last summer in 2010. This coming season, although Jennings will continue to run the veer most likely, Watkins will be used more as a focal point in the offense and will be moved around from TE, WR, FB, and HB. He will for sure also be used and moved around on defense likely between DE and LB. Watkins says he prefers offense right now but really he enjoys playing anywhere and is open to playing wherever he is needed and that goes for college also.

Watkins currently holds a 2.9 GPA and has taken the ACT twice with the first score being a 15 and he is awaiting his second score.

So what is Watkins doing this summer to prepare himself for the upcoming season and college recruiting. Watkins is attending as many camps as possible to showcase his skills and garner the attention of the college coaches in hope of landing some scholarship offers. He has attended Under Armour Camp in New Orleans back in April, the Badger Super 7 on 7 in Birmingham, AL, National Underclassmen Combine at STM in Lafayette, LA which he was named top TE MVP, UL's camp, Northwestern State's camp, and this past weekend Badger camp in Dallas, TX. So far Watkins says his highlights were being named top TE at the camp held at STM in Lafayette along with running a 4.6 40 and bench pressing 185 lbs. 21 times. Also he said he did not drop one pass at the camp held at Northwestern State.

Watkins was asked which schools have shown interest and he named Oklahoma, Nicholls St., Tulane, Southern, La Tech, Grambling, Lamar, Arkansas, McNeese, and Louisiana. Watkins states at this time he does not currently hold any offers and does not have any favorites. When asked about what he thought about UL and there camp, Watkins replied he was very impressed with the camp itself and the facilities such as the coaches offices, weight room, stadium, and the indoor practice facility. He also mentioned he spoke with Coach Munoz and Munoz had good things to say about him. I then asked him to tell me something else about the camp at UL and he said "no one could hold him in one on one drills from either TE or WR position."
