UL Softball Signs Six

Wednesday was the first day of the NCAA's early signing period and Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball program announed the signing of six athletes to its 2012 class.

The nationally ranked UL softball program inked six athletes on the first day of the NCAA's early signing period Wednesday. The early signees of the 2012 class consist of the following players:

Shyanne McDowell C Haughton, La (Haughton HS)
Corin Voinche’ INF Scott, La (Teurlings Catholic HS)
Shellie Landry OF Broussard, La (St. Thomas More HS)
Sara Corbello P/1B Lake Charles, La (Barbe HS)
Gabby Felps UT St. Amant, La (St. Amant HS)
Kelsey Vincent 1B Tomball, Texas (Tomball HS)


Sara Corbello
Come from one of the state's top softball programs Barbe high in Lake Charles, La. Corbello can play a number of positions and is known for ability to hit with power and her outstanding numbers from the pitching circle. Corbello’s 2010 pitching statistics include: 178 innings pitched, 339 strikeouts, and an earned run average of 0.63. In 2011 she had a batting average of .395, slugging percentage of .756, on base percentage of .470, and 9 home runs.

Corbello has led the Buccaneers to three state playoff appearances, and is a four year letterwinner. She is also a three-time member of the All-Southwest team, and has earned the prestigious award of 2011 Louisiana Softball Gatorade Player of the Year.

Gabby Felps
Felps is out of the At. Amant High School in Gonzales,La. is a third baseman, also lettered in track as well as softball.

Felps was awarded with the 2009 Rookie of the Year, 2010 and 2011 NFCA Academic All-American, 2010 Southern Star Showcase MVP, and Wendy’s Heisman Award Nominee.

Felps led her travel softball team in runs (44), walks (19), and stolen bases (16).

Shellie Landry
Comes from St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette (La) were Landry plays the outfield and is a four year letterwinner in softball, while leading the Cougars to State Championships in 2009 and 2010.

Landry is a multi-sport athlete in volleyball and softball. She has won multiple state championships in both sports for STM.

Shyanne McDowell
Comes from Haughton High School in Haughton, La. McDowell received honors of All-District and All-State Catcher for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. McDowell was also awarded the Louisiana High School Coaches Award in 2010 and 2011.

McDowell’s 2011 season included a .509 batting average, eight homeruns, and 38 RBI. She stands at “5’10” with a strong throwing arm, and has led Haughton HS to a combined 54-9 record the past two seasons.

Kelsey Vincent
Comes to the Cajuns out of Tomball High School in Tomball, Texas. Vincent previously committed to play ball at Kansas, before signing with the Cajuns. She plays third base, first base, and the catcher positions.

Vincent as a big hitter with homerun ability, and also has a dugout personality. In her junior year, she hit .375, with 10 homeruns, and 36 RBI’s, leading the Cougars to a 34-6 season.

Corin Voinche’
Comes from Teurlings Catholic High School in Lafayette. Voinche’s high school team has appeared in the State tournament each of the last three years, including a State Runner-Up finish in 2011.

Voinche’ is a three-time All-District shortstop, two-time first team All-Acadiana shortstop, and was awarded with first team All-State Infield in 2011.
