Lafayette, La. - Louisiana’s defense forced four turnovers and Brett Baer kicked four field goals as the Ragin’Cajuns dumped the Lamar Cardinals 40-0 in impressive fashion at Cajun Field Saturday night.
The Cajuns set the tone in the game from
The Opening
kick-off as Darryl Surgent returned Lamar’s Justin Stout’s kick 41 yards to the UL 42 yard-line.
Blaine Gautier
would hit tight-end
Jacob Maxwell
for 16-yard pass on the first play of the Cajuns possession. The Cajuns offensive drive would stall after 2 incomplete passes from Gautier and a 2-yard run from
Alonzo Harris
.
Senior
Brett Baer
would come on to nail a 52-yard field goal, the longest of his career and would later add three more to break a school record with 15 consecutive field goals.
The first UL possession that ended on Brett Baer’s 52-yard field goal was the first of eight straight scoring possessions by the Cajun’s offense during the first half.
The Cajuns momentum would continue on Lamar’s first offensive possession as Cardinal quarterback Mossakowski was sacked on third down by Cajun defensive tackle
Justin Hamilton
forcing a fumble that was recovered by junior linebacker
Justin Anderson
.
The Cajuns began their second possession at the Lamar 29 after the fumble recovery by Anderson. Gautier would then lead the offense to another Cajuns score, connecting with Jacob Maxwell on a 2-yard touchdown pass.
UL would go on to add another 30-points on the board before half-time and shut the Lamar Cardinals out in the second-half for the 40-0 victory.
The Louisiana defense forced three fumbles on the day, one apiece from
Qyen Griffin
, Justin Anderson and
Rodney Gillis
. Gillis also collected the Cajun’s first interception of the season late in the second quarter.
Blaine Gautier and
Terrance Broadway
combined for 203 passing yards and
Jamal Robinson
led the Cajuns receivers with 86-yards in receptions.
The Cajuns defense limited Lamar (0-1) to just 194 yards total offense and limited Cardinals quarterback Ryan Mossakowski to 81 yards on his 12 completions. Featured running back
Herschel Sims
was held to 42 net yards on 14 carries.
The Cajuns will travel to
Troy
next weekend to open Sun Belt Conference play against the Trojans. The game will be televised nationwide on ESPN3.com.
Game Notes
Injuries
Running back
Montrel Carter
left the game with a knee injury and is scheduled for an MRI Sunday or Monday. Wide-receiver Darryl Surgent tweaked a hamstring and was pulled as a precautionary measure.
The victory improved the Ragin’ Cajuns to 10-4 in two seasons under
Mark Hudspeth
and a perfect 6-0 at Cajun Field during the time.
