LAFAYETTE, La. -- UL quarterback Terrance Broadway threw for a touchdown and ran for two more after replacing starter Blaine Gautier to help Louisiana beat Florida International 48-20 Saturday night.
Louisiana (3-1, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference) jumped out to a 24-0 lead. Senior
Blaine Gautier
was responsible for the first two scores, a 3-yard touchdown run and a 2-yard touchdown pass to
Jacob Maxwell
. Gautier finished 6-for-11 with 86 yards passing.
Terrance Broadway
's 4-yard touchdown run with 42 seconds left in the second quarter helped the Ragin' Cajuns build a 31-14 halftime lead. Broadway finished 15 of 19 for 228 yards passing, and added 27 yards rushing on six carries.
Broadway added to the lead on the first possession of the second half, finding
Harry Peoples
for a huge 78-yard touchdown, increasing the lead to 38-14 and ending any hope for the Golden Panthers (1-4, 0-1). Peoples led all receivers with 10 catches for 150 yards.
In his first-career start,FIU true freshman
E.J. Hilliard
was 16-of-26 for 206 yards in the air with one rushing touchdown. Senior
Wayne Times
hauled in a team-high six catches while junior
Willis Wright
was the leader in yards with 58. Junior
Kedrick Rhodes
and senior
Jeremiah Harden
each added a score apiece on the ground.
The Cajuns defense dominated their final Sun Belt meeting with FIU – Panthers enter Conference USA in 2013. UL held a 23-10 edge in first downs, 187-55 advantage in rushing yards, outpassed the Panthers 314-204 and nearly doubled the Panthers in total offense (501-259).
The Cajuns were also helped by two interceptions, one from safety
Rodney Gillis
and the other from cornerback Jamarlous Moten on the night.
UL kicker
Brett Baer
continued his record setting year, scoring twelve points during the game. Baer entered the game leading the nation with eight field goals this year, is now 10-for-11 for this season and 35-for-38 for his career. His 12 points scored in the game raised his career total to (190), moving him from 10th to eighth on the UL career scoring list.
Louisiana will host
Tulane
next week for the school's 67th annual Homecoming game on Saturday, October 6th.
