The Gueydan Bears, boosted by the legs (and hands) of Trevor DeRouen, are sitting at 3-1 on the year.
Gueydan had a well-deserved open date this week after outscoring South Cameron by a 38-28 margin on September 21st. Through four weeks, DeRouen (6-0, 185. 4.56) was leading the state of Louisiana in both rushing and scoring.
"I have 964 yards rushing on 121 yards rushing," said DeRouen, who expects to play defensive back in college. "I have 13 touchdowns with two on returns. I have two interceptions.
"I'm averaging 35 to 40 yards per kick return. I return punts but haven't been able to actually return one because teams kick it away from me."
DeRouen says he likely will play corner on the next level. He camped with the local Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette over the summer.
"Their coaches said I'm one of the top prospects," he said. "UL is great. They're coaches are up tempo, great coaches...the type of coaches I'd like to play under in college. They strive to be good."
DeRouen ran for a career-best 308 yards last year vs. LaSalle. He had 40 attempts for 287 yards and three TDs in the recent South Cameron game.
The senior sports a 3.4 GPA and is awaiting his test score.
ULM and North Texas also have shown interest.
"I try to be a leader and prepare my team," he said. "I also try to stay humble."
Coaches Jay Johnson and Tim Rebowe are recruiting DeRouen for the Cajuns.
