Cajuns Playing for First Win of Season

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns (0-2) will host the Nicholls Colonels (1-1) Saturday September 14th at 6PM at Cajun Field. The Cajuns will be looking for their first victory of the 2013 season after traveling to Arkansas and Kansas State for the first two weeks of the season.

The Cajuns will face a confident Nicholls team Saturday evening that is coming off a big 27-23 victory over FBS program Western Michigan last weekend. Starting quarterback Kalen Henderson went down with a broken ankle after the Colonels jumped up on the Broncos 21-9. Local Crowley product Tuskani Figaro replaced Henderson at quarterback and played well enough to hold on for the win in the second half.

With the injury to Henderson, the Colonels are expected to turn to Beau Hebert (son of Bobby Hebert) who did not play last week against Western Michigan due to a concussion he received on a hit to the head against Oregon the first week of the season. The (6'4,215) Hebert is a tall target that likes to sling the ball around to his receivers, but is not considered much of a threat running.

RB Marcus Washington (5-11,215) returns for the Colonels and ran very hard against the Cajuns in the 2010 game at Cajun Field. Wide receivers Erik Buchanan (6'3,205) and Carey Fortson (6'0,180) are play makers in the passing game.

On the defensive side of the football, big nose tackle Joe Bonner (6'5,335) and defensive end Lorenza Young (6'2,275) anchor the front. Bonner is supposed to be out for today's game against the Cajuns, but it could be a game time decision.

The strength of the Colonel defense is the secondary, especially the safety position with local products Siegan Vergenal (6'0,205) and T.J. Lumar (6'0,195). Both are very good at stopping the run and making hard hits in the secondary.

The Cajuns will have their hands full and really need to get off to a good start on the offensive side of the football. The Colonels play a 3-3-5 defense like ULM and the Cajuns will need to establish the run early to open up the passing attack. It's also important for the UL defense to get some key stops and play good run defense. The Cajuns should walk away with the victory if they can control the ball offensively and play sound defense and special teams.
