Elkins Grabs Sun Belt Player of the Week

LAFAYETTE, La. – After hitting three home runs and driving in nine runs, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball sophomore Lexie Elkins was named the Sun Belt softball Player of the Week, as announced by the Conference office on Monday.

Elkins picked up the player of the week honor in her first weekend as a member of the Ragin' Cajuns after transferring from Texas Tech in the summer.

"Lexie has worked extremely hard to prepare for the season," head coach Michael Lotief said. "It was a special weekend. I think that the atmosphere from the crowd and the weekend energized her and brought out her best. It was a nice welcome to Ragin' Cajuns Country. We are happy to have her and I'm excited to watch her compete and continue to develop throughout her career."

Elkins kicked off her week with a pair of home runs in her Ragin' Cajuns debut. Her first home run kicked off a three-run seventh inning to force extra innings, and in the eighth inning, she launched a game-winning home run, to propel the Cajuns past Northern Iowa.

She finished the weekend with a .474 (9-for-19) batting average, while leading the team with three home runs and nine RBI.

The Cajuns will return to the diamond on Friday, when they host the 2014 Ragin' Cajuns Invitational, opening their tournament with Memphis and nationally ranked Michigan at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
