LAFAYETTE, La. – Freshmen Haley Hayden and Corin Voinché hit two home runs each, and juniors Jordan Wallace and Christina Hamilton both picked up complete game victories, as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns defeated fourth-ranked Michigan, 8-6, and Valparaiso, 3-2, at Lamson Park on Friday.
victory was the Cajuns' first regular season victory against a top-five team since they defeated #5
on March 15, 2012 at the Judi Garman Classic.
"The bats came alive early today," associate head coach T.J. Hubbard said. "It was a great performance overall and a great team effort in that first game. It was a huge win this early in the year. To see where they are at with the youth we have it is great to see them hold their composure.
"You can say it was a bit of a bittersweet revenge for them," Hubbard added of the win against Michigan. "I was proud with the way they attacked the game today. They were ahead of every step."
After Shelbi Redfearn gave the Cajuns a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Michigan, Hayden struck for her first of the game, sending a no-doubt shot to left field to make it 2-0 in the third inning. One batter later, Redfearn added her second RBI of the game, also homering and making it 3-0.
The Cajuns made it 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning, this time a pair of RBI singles. Sophomores Shellie Landry and Samantha Walsh picked up hits, with Landry's driving in Hayden, and Walsh one batter later, driving in pinch runners Meagan Thomas and Cassidy White.
Michigan cut the deficit with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, but starting pitcher Jordan Wallace got out of the no-out jam, striking out two batters and getting the third out from a pop up in the infield to limit the damage and keep the Cajuns up 6-1.
Voinché responded to the lone Wolverine run with her first home run of the day in the sixth. The 5-0 infielder sent a 1-1 pitch just over the wall for her first career home run.
"She has been working very hard the last few weeks," Hubbard said of Voinché. "She has been working on her swing and she got in there and got some great pitches to hit. That is a part of the lineup that isn't always productive and she is holding it down pretty good."
The Cajuns added a run on an error later in the inning to push their lead to six, 8-2.
Michigan, playing as the home team, didn't give up in the seventh inning.
They added four runs on three hits including back-to-back RBI doubles from Nicole Sappingfield and Sierra Romero, but Wallace managed to stop them short and pick up her second win of the season.
Wallace tossed 7.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and one earned run, while striking out seven.
The Cajuns struck first again in the second game with Hayden's second home run of the day. The freshman sent a two-run homer to center field, scoring Redfearn to give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.
Voinché added to the Cajuns lead in the fourth inning, also with her second homer of the game. This time there was much less doubt, sending the ball five rows into the outfield bleachers, giving the Cajuns a 3-0 lead.
Valpo got to Hamilton for the first time in the game in the top of the sixth inning, with a two-run home run to right center.
The home run would go down as one of the only blemishes on Hamilton's day, sending the next six batters down in order to pick up her second win of the season. She tossed 7.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits and no walks, while fanning seven batters.
The Cajuns return to the diamond tomorrow when they take on Michigan for the second time this weekend at 2 p.m. and
at 4:30 p.m. The Cajuns will finish up their tournament on Sunday when they take on Central Arkansas at 2 p.m.
