Cajuns Baseball Rallies Late
"I give credit to our hitters for staying the course tonight," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We had trouble getting a hit in the critical moments of the game last night, but tonight we were able to correct that and it wound up being the difference in the ballgame."
The Ragin' Cajuns outhit the Cowboys (19-12, 9-3 Southland) 13-9 on the evening as the first three hitters in the lineup combined to go 7-for-18 with five RBI and scored five runs.
Ryan Leonards led the squad with three hits, while Blake Trahan, Seth Harrison and Jace Conrad each had a pair of hits. Conrad increased his hit streak to 19-games with his single in the third inning. The Lafayette native is now four games back of Chris Webb for the school record. Webb recorded a 23-game hit streak in 1996.
Harrison also increased his on base streak to 21 games and is the third Louisiana player to record a double-digit hit streak with a hit in the last 10 games.
Greg Milhorn had a strong outing out of the bullpen to improve to 3-1 on the year holding McNeese State to one run on two hits in three innings. Milhorn retired seven of the last eight batters he faced to earn the win.
MSU's Cole Prejean was handed his second loss of the season after giving up four runs on two hits with a walk and hit a batter in one inning of work.
Leonards manufactured his own run in the top of the first as he reached on an error and then stole second and moved to third on the throw down on a Harrison strikeout. Leonards then came in to score on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0 Cajuns.
The Cowboys plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-1 lead. After a leadoff double by Andrew Guillotte, Jackson Gooch sent a double down the left field line to score Guillotte. Two batters later, Gooch scored on a ball hit up the middle by Connor Lloyd.
The Ragin' Cajuns regained the lead in the top of the second inning on a couple home runs. With two on and two out, Michael Strentz sent the first pitch he saw well over the fence in left for a three-run home run to give Louisiana a 4-2 edge. In the next at bat, Trahan made it back-to-back home runs driving a ball over the wall in left.
Reed Gordy cut into the lead in the bottom of the second sending a solo homer out of the park in left center to make the score 5-3.
Conrad scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third to extend the Cajuns lead to 6-3.
In the bottom half of the third, the Cowboys continued to eat away at the Cajuns advantage on a two-run double by Lloyd to pull MSU within a run.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, McNeese State went back in front 7-6 on a two-run homer by third baseman Matt Gallier.
Louisiana answered in the top of the seventh as Conrad brought home Caleb Adams on a ball hit to second to tie the game at 7-all. Adams reached on a one-out triple down the left field line. The hit increased Adam's hit streak to 11 games as he has now reached safely in 29 straight games.
Matt Williams gave the Cowboys an 8-7 edge in the bottom of the seventh scoring Gooch from third on a safety squeeze with one out.
The Ragin' Cajuns reclaimed the lead for the third time in the game in the top of the eighth exploding for six runs on four hits, three walks and a hit batsman to go in front 13-8. Trahan pulled the Cajuns even on a single to left scoring Nick Thurman from third. Leonards gave Louisiana the lead on a two-run single to left. After a Conrad RBI single, Thurman drove a bases-loaded pinch-hit single up the middle to plate two more runs and cap the scoring in the inning.
Harrison tacked on a run in the top of the ninth on a RBI single to left to make the final 14-8.
The Cajuns open a three-game conference series at 6 p.m. on Friday as they host UALR at the Tigue. For the first time this season the Saturday start will be at 6 p.m., while first pitch for Sunday's contest is slated for 1 p.m.
