Cajuns Host Large Group This Weekend

The Cajuns host a group of twelve prospects this weekend that consist of several big name athletes. This weekend’s large group is the first of several leading up to National Signing Day on February 7th. | |||

This weekend’s group of prospects list several big names Cajun football recruiting fans will recognize, but there are several other sleeper prospects scheduled to visit as well. Leading the list of headliners from this weekends list of prospects is 6-4,205-pound QB Tim Curry of Elsian Fields, Texas. Curry, who grew up in Benton, La., completed 51.9 percent of his passes for 1,594 yards, 22 touchdowns and only six interceptions during the 2008 season. Curry visited ULM last week and has stated he will visit Louisiana Tech at a later date.
Another hot prospect visiting this weekend is 5-9,170-pound WR/Athlete Damaris Johnson of Destrehan,La. Johnson is not an imposing figure, but his 4.4 speed has enticed a few BCS programs to take a second look. Johnson has just completed his senior season with 81 catches 1,228 yards and 12 TDs. Damaris visited Louisiana Tech after the state championship game and had a visit scheduled for ULM.
Another Destrehan athlete, 6-0,190-pound S/LB Chris Richard will travel with his teammate Damaris Johnson as well. Richard recorded 3 sacks and 14 tackles, showing college recruiters his versatility on the defensive side of the ball. Richard canceled a visit Scheduled for Louisiana Tech this weekend, to visit the Cajuns.
Luther Ambrose is another name that brings excitment to Cajun fans. The 5-9,175-pound RB from St.James Louisiana, visited ULM last weekend. The speedy back finished the 2007 season with over 1,300 yards and 19 touchdowns.
The Cajuns have scheduled several defensive prospect from Florida as part of the visiting group of athletes this weekend. At the top the list is the highly touted 5-10,170-pound CB Rodney Gillis out of St.Thomas Aquinas High School. Gillis was a named to the All-State and All-Broward County Football Teams. Rodney also Participated in the Florida All-American Bowl in which had an interception to help lead the East team to a 12-8 victory over the West. The Cajuns will also host 6-2,205-pound S/LB Devon Lewis-Buchanan from Suncoast High in Fort Lauderdale,Fl. Buchanan is considered a sleeper because of his size and speed; he played both offense and defense for Suncoast, but has flown under the radar because he camped as a quarterback this past summer.
Desire Street CB Tim Jackson is considered another sleeper prospect on the defensive side of the ball. The 5-10,170-pound prospect is considered to be a speedy athlete with track performances of 10.5 100 meters, and 21.8 200 meters. Jsckson, a member of the District 7-1A All-District team, visited Oklahoma in November. Melvin White is another sleeper prospect scheduled to visit this weekend. The 6-2, 180 DB/WR from Brazosport High,Texas is a member of the Greater Houston Top 100 team.He rushed for 713 yards, 9 Tds and passed for 999 yards and 6Tds during the 2007 football season. Frank Trotter,a 6-2, 255 DE from Leflore High, Mobile is also part of the group visiting this weekend. Trotter,was a member of the All Area 6A Region 2 Football Team; completed his senior year with 8 sacks on the season. He attended camps at UL, Southern Mississippi and LSU.
Cajun fans will also recognize a local name scheduled this weekend in Kyron Benoit. Benoit 6-0,210 was a preseason All-Louisiana Top 50 Prospect after a tremendous junior year in which he was named 3A All-State Team. Benoit is a threat both running and passing. During his junior season he completed 59-of-106 passes for 940 yards and 9 TDs, and ran 58 times for 429 yards and 6 scores. The Cajuns like Benoit’s athletic ability and potential on the defensive side of the ball. Benoit has potential at the safety or weak side linebacker position.
Sean Osborne rounds out the list of recruits visiting this weekend. Osborne committed to the Cajuns in December. Besides UL, Osborne said he also had offers from Air Force, Central Arkansas, Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State. An honor student with a 3.3 grade point |
