The name Jonathan Lucroy always invokes fond memories for supporters of the Cajun baseball program. Now another Lucroy is making a name for himself in the Florida High school baseball ranks, younger brother David.

Ask any Ragin’Cajun baseball fan about former catcher Jonathan Lucroy and they will always have a particular game story to tell you about him. As much excitement and publicity as the Lucroy name has brought to the Cajun baseball program, another Lucroy is quietly building his own resume as a college pitching prospect in Orlando Florida. Younger brother David Lucroy’s recent work on the mound in the WWBA U16 World Championships has garnered him interest from college baseball programs, including UL. David Lucroy spoke to the Cajun RedZone last night about his fond memories of visits to Lafayette to watch Jonathan play and his pitching with the Nationally Ranked U16 Underclass Orlando Scorpions program.

David Lucroy is not your typical college pitching prospect; he doesn’t come off as a cocky young man but in fact is very humble in talking about his abilities on the mound.

“I’m not sure why anyone would one to interview me,” David stated.” “I haven’t had many of these types of request, so I’m a little surprised by your interest in an interview.”

But it shouldn’t be s surprise to the 6-3, 200-pound right hander. Any young 16 old pitcher with his size, fast ball clocked in the mid 80’s mph, 71 mph changeup and 60 mph curve would draw such attention.

“I really don’t think about those things,” admitted Lucroy. “When I’m on the mound, I try and focus on the hitter at the plate and not how hard I’m throwing or who is watching me pitch. I’m more concerned about getting that guy out and helping my team win the game.”

That is exactly what David Lucroy did last weekend in Jupiter, Florida, at the National Underclassmen 2009 World Wood Bat Association World Championship with UL assistant coaches Babineaux and Trahan in attendance.

“We finished in third place, out of 100 teams participating in the WWBA World Championship,” David said. “I pitched really well against the 4th ranked New Jersey Twins, throwing a 4-hitter in that game.”

David has visited Lafayette many times with his parents to watch Jonathan play and attend several of the Cajun Baseball Camps. He talked about the atmosphere at M.L. Tigue Moore Field and the fans.

“The game atmosphere at the Tigue is very much like some of the big programs,” stated Lucroy. “The fans are crazy and I love the food from the Bull Pen Club, those guys can cook really good food. It’s just a great college atmosphere and program to play baseball in.”

Does David feel any pressure to play at UL or make a decision early because of the program’s ties with the Lucroy family?

“No, I don’t think so,” David admitted. “Jonathan gives me advice at times and he told to me to take my time, and don’t rush into a decision. I mean, my parents would love for me to go play college ball out of state at UL, but I’m not going to make that decision until I look at all my options.”

David Lucroy knows what the Cajun program has to offer for student athlete.

“I know Coach Robichaux is an excellent pitching instructor and pushes academics,” said Lucroy. “They are improving the facilities and the fan base is tremendous. UL is a really good baseball program and I’m certainly going to listen to what the coaches’ offer.”

Ragin’ Cajun baseball fans certainly wouldn’t mind hearing the Lucroy name announced again in the starting lineup at the “Tigue”.
