FIU PK Dustin Rivest kicked a 24-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Panthers to a 20-17 win over Louisiana’s Ragin’Cajun on Saturday.
The Panthers (2-6, 2/3 Sun Belt Conference) blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by Louisiana’s
Tyler Albrecht
in overtime to beat the Ragin' Cajuns (4-4, 2-2) for the first time in six games.
Paul McCall
threw for 250 yards and an interception for FIU, but he helped send the game into overtime with a 3-yard touchdown pass to
Greg Ellingson
with 10 seconds left in the game.
Chris Masson
had 254 yards passing, one touchdown and an interception for Louisiana-Lafayette.
Louis Lee
caught three passes for 62 yards; including a 40-yard touchdown pass from Masson to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 14-7 lead with 1:07 before halftime.
Yobes Walker
rushed for 40 yards on 18 carries for the Ragin' Cajuns.
The Cajun defense forced four turnovers in the game, including Gerren Blount’s second interception of the season.
The Cajuns most impressive offensive drive came in the 2 minute offense in the second quarter. Chris Masson directed the team 84 yards in six plays, taking only 1:13 off the clock. Masson connected on long passes of 18 yards to Marlin Miller and 20 yards to Falgout. The Cajuns led 14-7 following a 40-yard pass from Masson to Louis Lee. Originally just a short completion, Lee was given free running room down the right side after a pair of vicious cut blocks by Miller cleared the way.
The Cajun defense played well most of the day, putting pressure on FIU QB Paul McCall on crucial downs. The defense front collected fours sacks, with
Daylon McCoy
,
Hall Davis
,
Terrell Richardson
and
Tyrell Gaddies
each collecting one.
