Louisiana's Ragin'Cajuns hit the new field turf for the first scrimmage of the fall Saturday afternoon.
For the first time during the Bustle era, the scrimmage was scripted so that each series would not last more than seven plays. This script would only allow the offense the opportunity to score on big plays, and the redshirt freshman QB was involved in two such plays for scores during the game.
The first scoring play came via a 55-yard rush by quarterback Chris Masson. Masson executed the run option fake perfectly and ran around the right side 30 yards down the field with a blocker to score. The defense took the fake to the back, allowing Masson to score with only CB Dwight Bentley chasing from behind.
Masson was again the QB on the second scoring play, hitting Lance Kelley on a 54-yard pass down the sideline. Freshman safety Devon Lewis #31 jumped the route on the throw going for the interception, but missed, and Kelley ran untouched down the sideline for the score.
Masson finished 7-for-16 for 100 yards passing on the day, working with the first and second team offense.
Cajun starter Michael Desormeaux played in three series during the scrimmage, hitting on 12-of-15 passing for 128 yards and had one rush for five yards.
Lance Kelley, Jason Chery, Caleb Rubin and Ross Goodlett all looked good catching the ball during the scrimmage. Kelley led all receivers with six catches for 95 yards and Jason Chery grabbed three catches for 36 yards, adding 29 yards on the ground.
True freshman running back Yobes Walker had 15 carries for 76 yards, while junior Matt Dupre totaled 12 carries for 64 yards. Dupre’s total was helped by a 25-yard scamper down to the two-yard line, but the play was called back on a holding penalty.
The Cajuns defense collected two interceptions, a fumble recovery and four sacks or touches. Terrell Richardson led all defenders with an interception and a fumble recovery.Antwyne Zanders had several big hits, including one in which he met Tyrell Fenroy in the hole for a one yard gain.
CB Junior Jean had the hit of the day on Caleb Rubin, coming from the opposite side of the defense and hitting him so hard that it knocked Jean unconscious for a moment.
The Cajuns will take Sunday off for its annual Fan Day, from 5-7pm. The team will return to practice Monday afternoon.
Extra Points
WR Derrick Smith, SS Derik Keyes, TE Eric Jones, DT LaQuincy Williams and WR Richie Falgout were held out of the scrimmage with minor injuries.
The only serious injury on the day was Offensive lineman Nasser Jamal,as he was carted off the field in the first half with a knee injury. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI and will be re-evaluated at a later date.
