The Ragin’Cajuns held their second scrimmage of the fall Saturday morning at Cajun Field. While some key athletes sat out the scrimmage, the coaching staff was looking at key positions and for more consistency on both sides of the ball.

The first team offense lead by Michael Desormeaux made some big plays early in the scrimmage. On the third series of the game, Desormeaux hit a streaking Jason Chery deep for a 64-yard touchdown.

Desormeaux finished 12-of-18 passing for 192 yards and one score. Chris Masson took most of the snaps behind Desormeaux, but didn’t have a good day finishing 2-of-8 for 43 yards.

Freshman quarterback Blaine Gauthier had a good scrimmage, completing 6-of-6 passing for 90 yards and ran six times for 53 yards, including a two-yard rushing score. Blaine Gauthier seems to be more polished throwing the ball at this time, then fellow freshman Keldric White. Freshman Brady Thomas had several bright moments during the scrimmage, including a four-yard touchdown pass to freshman TE Ladarius Green.

Red-shirt freshman Brad McGuire was held out of the scrimmage, but was dressed out on the sideline.

Jason Chery and Ladarius Green led all receivers with three receptions each. Chery led the offense with a team-high 83 yards. Louis Lee, Lance Kelley, Ross Goodlett and Caleb Rubin all looked good at times catching the ball. Derrick Smith struggled some today, returning from missing time with a sore hamstring. Smith missed his assignment on several plays, one in particular in which he was supposed to chase the DB and then turn up field. Smith elected to block the DB on the play and Desormeaux was sacked on the rollout.

Ladarius Green has been impressive in both scrimmages catching the ball. While the true freshman has work to do in the area of blocking, he has no problem catching the ball. He will play this fall as a true freshman.

The offensive line started the scrimmage with tackles Brad Bryant, Kyle Plouhar and Sean Osborne all being held out of the game. Nasser Jamal is out for the season and Jaron Odum returned home this weekend because of a death in the family. Colin Windsor, Jonathan Decoster and Kyle Pirtle all played well at tackle. Brad Bustle, Ian Burks, Chris Fisher, Josh Robinson and Matt Autrey all played well on the interior.

Tyrell Fenroy had the longest run from the back field today, as he rumbled for 43 yards for a touchdown on his second carry of the day. True freshman Yobes Walker continues to impress, rushing for 47 yards on 12 rushing attempts. Walker showed his toughness during the scrimmage, taking several big hits, including one from safety Gerren Blount on a collision out of bounds, after a 12 yard run. Matt Dupre had several good runs during the scrimmage, including a pair of four-yard scoring runs against the goal line defense. Undre Sails did not dress out, but will be in full pads Monday.

The Defense also had its share of athletes held of the scrimmage. DT LaQuincey Williams, DE Jeremy Cook, LB Brent Burkhalter, SS Derek Keys and CB Tim Jackson were all held out of the scrimmage Saturday.

The defensive line really got after the offense today, showing more of the package Coach Fouquar has installed. The defense finished the day with nine sacks and three fumbles that I counted.

The front seven played well at times, putting pressure on the quarterback. Hall Davis, Terrell Richardson, Seth Adams, Lanier Coleman, Chris Lanaux, Nat Douglass, Jermaine Rogers and Sharrick Moore did a good job getting up the field at times. Derek Dean, Kyle Cox and Chris Johnson had some good moments, but also struggled at times against the first team line.

Antwyne Zanders and Richard Brooks both handled the MLB position with Burkhalter out for the scrimmage. I thought both played well, getting some big hits in the goal line series. Draylon McCoy had a really good scrimmage, with one fumble recovery and several other big plays including a pass break up that he should have intercepted. Grant Fleming, Jerzeel Washington and Jonathan Vance all played well at times during scrimmage with the first two units.

The secondary had its bright spots on the day, but the long pass to Chery brought back memories of last seasons play. Dwight Bentley continues to impress with his coverage skills, while Junior Jean and Orkeys Auriene continue to have a good fall. Justin Branden and Scooter Rogers are the seniors in this group, both needs to play with more consistency.

Gerren Blount played well during the scrimmage at safety and Maurice Rolle, Phillips Nevels and Devon Lewis all had their moments as well. Having Derek Keys back will give the safety position more depth, with the freshman Melvin White still waiting on the Clearing House. Devon Lewis has shown that he is talented at times, but like all freshmen misses assignments sometimes.

The Cajuns will hold their final scrimmage of the fall Wednesday afternoon. The scrimmage will be important has the staff tries to finalize the travel roster for the season opener against Southern Mississippi.
